For some patients with primary liver cancer who have difficulties with surgical treatment or have failed treatment with other treatment method. Clinical studies have published that proton  therapy is effective for them.

National Cancer Center(Director Eun-sook Lee)Tae-Hyun Kim, head of proton therapy center with the laboratory team, conducted a clinical trial(Phase II) on 45 hepatocellular carcinoma patients who had difficulty with or failed other treatments. The result were local contrtrol ratio was 95.2% and an annual survival rate of 86.4%, which is demonstrating the effectiveness and safety of proton therapy. The results of this research were published in the international journal Frontiers in Oncology in April.

The National Cancer Center introduced a proton therapy device for the first time in Korea in 2--7 and has more than 10 years of clinical experience. Tae-Hyun Kim, head of the proton therapy center said, "Proton therapy has the advantage of minimizing side effects from treatment while increasing the therapeutic effect compared to radiation therapy using X-rays and gamma rays."

In addition, Center of Director,Kim said," There seems to be many people who misunderstand that proton therapy is performed by a treatment machine." Indeed,  " Proton therapy is implemented by a radiation oncology doctor through clinical experience with the help of medical physicists, radiologists and nurses by using a treatment device." and also he emphasized the importance of the role and experience of the medical staff.

Director Kim also said, " The proton therapy center will endeaver to ensure that our people would receive the best treatment based on the spirit of challenge of endlessly researching the treatment of disease that are difficult to try in other private hospitals.
