Recently Chadwick Boseman passed away with colon cancer at the young age of 43. The disease that took his life was colon cancer. Colon cancer is a fatal disease that has almost no symptoms in earlier stage and is difficult to recover if treatment is delayed. Especially, young people in their 20s and 40s doesn't really concern on regular checkups can relatively neglect colon cancer and other colorectal disease, thus prevention and preparation are needed. According to data from the health insurance review and assessment service, the number of colon cancer patients in their 20s and 40s was 14,593 in total(7,910 males and 6,683 females) in 2019, accounting for 9.3% of the total number of patients 155,960.
Colon cancer is the second largest cancer after stomach cancer
The colon is the most important organ of our body, consisting of colon and rectum. Colon cancer refers to the cancer of the colon that occurs in the colon, which is also called colon cancer, colorectal cancer and lymphoma depending on the location of the disease, colon cancer is commonly referred to as colon cancer and rectal cancer is called colon cancer. Since 2017, the most common cancer in Korea is stomach cancer, Colon cancer is the second most common cancer in Korea after stomach cancer.
Colon cancer, the second largest cancer incidence in Korea is often caused by genetic factors(family history), dietary habits, environment and other changes in lifestyle patterns. It is reported that one cause is not colorectal cancer but is a compound cause of colorectal cancer. Colon cancer in Korea is steadily increasing due to the effects of western food culture, harmful environmental factors, smoking, drinking and other harmful causes that we generally know.
According to Bae Byung-koo, head of the tumor surgery center at H plus Yangji Hospital, "although early detection and general treatment are possible for those aged 50 or older due to public cooperation checkups and workplace checkups, young people are advised to udergo colonoscopy even if they have light symptoms because they are likely to be at high risk because they rarely have regular checkups." He also said, " one of the most common symptoms of colorectal cancer is that if you have an anal hemorrhage and you are over 50years old, you should be treated for simple anal disease whether you have a colon tumor or not."
Symptoms of colon cancers are...
If you suddenly get constipation or have a thin bowel movement, you should check your stomach for colon cancer, if you have blood stool, chronic fatigue, anemia and unknown weight loss. Considering colonoscopy as a regular colon cancer test that can only be received after people in their 50s, many young people do not feel the need for it which is just excessive. If the above symptoms persist for more than three to four weeks, regardless of age or gender, doctor should be diagnosed without hesitation and an endoscopy of colonoscopy in the past , colon cancer was very difficult to detect in early stage. Most of them have already developed a significant amount of cancer when discovered due to symptoms. However, since most Koreans are now able to get colonoscopy, the number of cases of colon cancer is increasing. Endoscopy is recommended to be tested every 2 years for gastroscopy and every 5 years for colonoscopy. There is a feces examination in the public cooperation and if blood is detected in feces test, colonoscopy can be performed immediately in case of colon cancer and the cost is reasonable. Patients with colon polyp removal or family history are advised to undergo colonoscopy every 2 years.
The method for diagnosing colon cancer conduct rectal balance tests, feces tests, other epidemiological tests, and blood tests. If colon cancer is suspected in the previous examination, it is checked by CT or colonoscopy. The most important colonoscopy is the anus which allows the endoscope to enter the anus and directly and identify colorectal cancer or polyps. Polyps can be removed early before developing cancer, which is effective in preventing cancer. Although it is not cancer, light polyps can be removed immediately through colonoscopy. After all, the most important thing in preventing earlier stage of colon cancer is regular endoscopy.
Colon cancer is grows when the cancerous surface produced in the large intestine mucosa enters and the stage of disease is determined by its depth. Cancer cells are metastasized through the lymph nodes, the immune system and when surgery is performed they perform a radical operation to resect large areas, including tumor and lymph nodes.
Colorectal cancer has a high mortality rate, but if early detection by examination is made, the recovery rate will increase. The 5 year survival rate for colon cancer is now close to 80%. If cancer is found only in the colon, the 5year survival rate will rise to 96% but if it spreads to the liver or other organs, the survival rate will drop significantly to 19.3%.
Nowadays, colon cancer surgery mainly uses laparoscopic surgery. The pain is less than normal abdominal surgery and the hospitalization period is much shorter than a week. According to Bae Byung-koo, head of the center, "early colon cancer can be treated with mucosal resection, a non- invasive treatment that removes cancer with an endoscopic method. and also said " A little further advanced cancer should be resected through the laparoscopy and colon cancer that has spread to the lymphatic gland should be treated with anti-cancer treatment after surgery.
